4 Obol / 1 Tetrobol

[ 4401] EUBOIA: HISTIAIA Silver Tetrobol (15 mm, 2.25 gm.) Struck c. 3rd Cent B.C. Reference: B.M.C 47. Head of Nymph Histiaia right., wreathed with vine. Nymph seated upon the stern of a galley. This type, commemorated the expulsion, with Athenian help of the pro-Macedonian tyrant Philistides in 340 B.C. Situated in the far north of the island, Histiaia did not begin producing coinage until the mid-4th Century B.C. From its extensive silver issues in the Hellenistic age it would appear to be a place of considerable commercial importance. The Nymph Histiaia was a patron “goddess” of the city.
