ANCIENT COINS. ROMAN. Augustus (27 B.C.– A.D. 14), Silver Denarius, 3.71g, 8h. Struck by M. Sanquinius, 17 B.C. AVGVST DIVI F LVDOS SAE , Herald, wearing a long robe and a feathered helmet, standing left, holding-out a winged caduceus in his right hand and a round shield in his left. Rev. M SANQVINIVS IIIVIR , youthful laureate head right (Genius Saeculari Novi? / deified Julius Caesar?) right, a comet with four rays and a tail above (RIC 340; BMC 70; BN 273-6). An insignificant banker’s mark in the obverse field, otherwise a wonderful example of a rarely available issue, with a superb old iridescent cabinet tone, good very fine, a very appealing coin. This issue was struck to commemorate the Ludi Saeculares that were held by Augustus in 17 B.C. The Secular Games were intended to mark a New Age brought about by the Divine Julius and his heir. Sold with an old collector’s ticket. $5,500
