In 1700 the Académie des Sciences et Belles-Lettres de Lyon was founded. In 1713, an Académie des Beaux-Arts de Lyon was founded, and eventually became the Société Royale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. In 1758, these two societies merged to become the Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon. The Academy was dissolved in 1793. It revived in 1800, July 13, as an Athénée. Since that time, it has taken various names, including: Académie Royale des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon; Académie Nationale des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon; Académie Impériale des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon; and Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon.
