1795 S-78 R1 Plain Edge. NGC graded Fine-15. Double Struck with a Significant Rotation. Choice glossy dark chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and very attractive, essentially flawless to the unaided eye; it takes a good glass to see any defects. The only marks are a couple extremely faint hairline scratches in the field under the cap, a small rim nick over the E in STATES, and a couple more faint hairline scratches at NE in ONE. Boldly double struck with an 80-degree clockwise rotation between strikes (CW as viewed from the obverse, CCW when looking at the reverse). The date and bust from the first impression are clearly visible in the field before the portrait, and ample strong undertype from the first strike is visible on the right side of the reverse. It doesn't take a glass to see the mint error on this cent. MDS, Breen state III (not that it matters in this case). Our grade is consistent with the slab grade. The attribution, error status, and Mervis provenance are shown on the NGC label. Estimated Value $3,000-UP. Ex Dr. Charles L. Ruby, Superior 2/11/1974:664-unknown-1989 EAC Sale 4/13/1989:52-Daniel W.
