1674,
SWEDEN. 2 Daler Plate Money, 1674. Karl XI (1660-97).
10 x 10.25 in. KM-PM19; AAH-276; BT-D11. EXTREMELY RARE plate with a star between two lilies below mintmark, denoting it is made of copper from Garpenberg (Tingstrom: 6 known examples). Stamps moderately uneven with the denomination stamp particularly light but still showing a lily below the mintmark, three legible and two complete dates. Legend variety of date stamp reads "SVECO: GOTO: VAN:". The reverse is of particular interest as there is a repeating break or cud as a result of the flattening process in making the copper sheet. It appears more than eighteen times on the reverse in various directions, shedding light on how the original piece of copper was moved to evenly disperse metal during the flattening process. Darker patina with some areas of sandy light brown. A very hard to find two year type which rarely appears at auction. Some light surface porosity. Otherwise attractive and very important in assembling a collection of plate money.
Pedigree: From the Stanley Aberdeen Collection.
