Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III the Great. Gold Stater (8.5 g), 336-323 BC. Teos, ca. 310-ca. 301 BC. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with coiled serpent. Reverse : AΛEΞANΔPOY, Nike standing facing, head left, holding wreath and stylis; in left field, griffin seated left above monogram. Price -; Hersh -; Arena 16, pl. 13, 30. Choice Very Fine. Price notes a drachm with the same controls, but was not aware of any staters. Likewise it is missing from Hersh's addendum to Price, but Arena includes it in her paper on the British Museum acquisitions (see V. Arena. "New Acquisitions at the British Museum: additions to Price, Alexander, and the 1870 Larnaca Hoard" NC 2003, pp. 49-57). Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
