† Coins of India. East India Company. Bengal Presidency, Silver ¼-Rupee, Benares mint, AH 1229 Year 17/49, machine struck, oblique milling (PS 7.148; KM 36, in older editions). Very fine. At one time it was thought that only a few of these were known, but we have a record of five pieces and a few others are sure to exist. This example has the appearance of a circulated specimen coin, due to the care of design, but most examples appear to be well circulated. The “1749” on the reverse is a combination of the fixed Year 17 that appears on all the Benares EIC silver issued and the Regnal Year 49. Part of the David Fore Collection of British Indian Coins. £300-500
