1916,
GERMAN EAST AFRICA. 15 Rupien, 1916-T. PCGS MS-62.
Fr-1; KM-16.1. There are two reverse varieties, this one with the arabesque under T. A, crudely made design struck as an emergency issue. Struck during the East Africa Campaign during World War I, where Wilhelm’s troops were pitched against an alliance of British and Belgian troops. These coins were manufactured in a “mint” set up in a railroad car in Tabora (in modern day Tanzania). An issue with a low mintage of 9,803, many of the survivors came from non-numismatic circles, and as such are known to be ex Jewelry, cleaned, polished, etc. This piece is quite attractive for the type and would make a great addition for the world gold collector. Lovely light orange peel toning around the rims with choice original luster. Housed in an older generation PCGS holder and in this catalogers opinion quite conservatively graded.
