1824,
NICARAGUA. Granada. Real, (18)24 with Lion countermark. NGC VF-20.

KM-6; Jara-pg.49, Figure14 (for host type, see pg. 33 Figure-8/10 for countermark). Host coin is a Nicaraguan provisional 1 Real produced in imitation of Spanish colonial cob coinage. The obverse quadrants exhibit the letter "J-G" and "D-G" for Junta de Granada and Departamento de Granada respectively. The reverse design mimics that of the traditional cross type colonial cobs bearing the arms of Castile & Leon, however the lions have been replaced with pomegranates. The obverse has been countermarked with a radiant liberty cap, attributed to Leon Nicaragua (see Jara Figure 7) as documented on contemporary fiscal papers of 1824. EXTREMELY RARE. Toned. Some minor deposits. Deeply countermarked.
