† Coins of India. East India Company. East India Company, Bengal Presidency, Gold ½-Mohur, 5.80g, in the name of Shah ‘Alam II, AH 1176 Year 4, mint off-flan but without doubt Murshidabad type. Extremely fine and very rare. In 1761 the Calcutta mint turned its attention to the production of gold coins. It is not clear from the records whether any gold coins were actually struck but a Mohur dated AH 1176 Year 3 is illustrated by Dr Paul Stevens (p.27), and the present coin struck in the same Hijri year but with the following regnal year has every appearance of being in the same series. The engraving of the obverse is particularly finely executed. It is quite probable, therefore, that this is an example of the first gold coinage undertaken by the Bengal Presidency. Part of the David Fore Collection of British Indian Coins. £2000-3000
