ANDRONICUS II with MICHAEL IX (1295-1320). GOLD Hyperpyron. Constantinople. Obv: MP - ΘV. Bust of the Virgin orans within city walls. Sigla: Monogram - X. Rev: ANΔPNIKC XMOΠAΛ. Andronicus, on the left, and Michael, on the right side, kneeling on either side of Christ standing facing and crowning both emperors. Sigla: B - Γ. Sear 2396; PCPC Sigla -. The coin shows a pretty unusual and interesting feature: The sigla of the reverse were engraved in the dies in a second working step (or after the die has been already used?). When the figures and the titles were engraved it was clearly not planned to add a sigle, because no space has been left for them. Both are erasing parts of the legend which is still visible beneath. Condition: Good very fine. Weight: 4.1 g. Diameter: 27 mm.
