[ 3407] P.Accoleius Lariscolus Silver denarius (21mm, 3.45gm.), 43B.C. RARE Reference: Babelon Accoleia 1. Sydenham 1148. Sear Imperators 172. Woytek Arma et Nummi p.558. Crawford 486/1. P.ACCOLEIVS - LARISCOLVS Draped bust of Acca Larentia right. Triple cult statues of Nymphs Querquetulanae; behind, the cypress grove of the Lares on Mt.Coelius, which was consecrated to Nymps QuerquetulanaeAccording to ancient mythology, Acca Larentia had been the wife of Fautulus, the shepherd who had found Romulus & Remus. She became the twins nurse after the were taken from the she-wolf. On the reverse of this coin we see three females standing, their heads terminating in trees. These were the sisters of Phaeton, the son of Sol, god of the Sun. Phaeton had persuaded his father to allow him to drive the chariot of the Sun, but the youth was too weak to control the powerful horses. The chariot ran out of its usual track, and it came so close to the Sun that it nearly set it on fire. Jupiter was enraged by this and killed him with a flash of lighting and hurled the body down into the River Eridanus. His sisters ,nymphs Querquetulanae, who had yoked the horses to the chariot, bewailed the death of Phaeton so bitterly that the Gods, in their compassion, changed them into poplar trees and their tears into amber. The reverse type may also allude to the town of Aricia, the location of the temple of Diana Nemorensis and, perhaps not coincidentally, the birthplace of Octavian's mother, Atia. It was struck shortly after her death and may be an oblique commemorative to her by honoring her birthplace. In line with this explanation for the reverse, the trees may have been intended to refer to the temple's sacred grove. Provided with certificate of authenticity.
