Winged female deity (Potnia theron) standing facing, head turned l., wearing long chiton, holding in each hand deer by the antlers. Rev. Four-part incuse square. Rosen Coll. 23, 320 (this specimen). Unique and of an exceptional type. Short, globular flan. Good very fine Ex J. P. Rosen coll. and ex Münzen und Medaillen AG, Basel sale 72 (1987), 82. - Potnia theron means Mistress of the wild animals; she was the protector of the wood and of the hunt and we know her from many figural representations in the Minoan art. In the Greek culture Artemis took over her role, see e.g. the statue of Artemis Ephesia, represented on coins with two stags.
