1854 Judd-159a High Rarity 6 Copper Electrotype. PCGS graded Proof 65 Brown. Similar in overall appearance to the Heritage FUN 2009 specimen graded MS65BN by NGC, though a different coin. The obverse of this unusual piece is a die made by reducing an 1854 silver dollar, but in such a way that many details are blurry, especially at the date. The reverse is a new die with a heavy, open wreath of oak leaves and acorns tied with a ribbon and bow at bottom, 1 CENT in the center. Many different alloys were recorded, but the Judd-159A, Pollock-186 is called a copper electrotype. Pollock notes that most examples offered over the years are electrotypes, said to have been produced at the Mint in such a way that they "have a clear ring." The devices show the circular lines from the reducing lathe. Yet the fields show a surprising amount of pleasing steel-brown to reddish brown luster while the surfaces overall are problem-free.
