Die im privaten Auftrag von der Shenyang Mint mit dem Prägejahr 1989 in unterschiedlichen Gewichten und Metallen hergestellten Münzen waren nach den Vorfällen auf dem chinesischen Tiananmenplatz vom Juni 1989 beinahe unverkäuflich. Von den ursprünglich geprägten 2‘538 Gold- und 7‘328 Silbermünzen zu jeweils 2 Unzen sind alle bis auf jeweils nur ganz wenige Belegexemplare eingeschmolzen worden, während die Prägestempel auf 1990 umgeschnitten worden sind und anschliessend mit diesen die ursprünglich vereinbarte Auflage – neu mit dem Prägejahr 1990 – produziert worden ist. The coins with the date 1989, in diverse weights and metals minted privately on behalf of the Shenyang Mint, were almost unsaleable after the events of June 1989 on the Chinese Tiananmen Square. Of the 2538 gold and 7328 silver coins, each at 2 ounces, originally minted, all excepting a very few specimen copies, were melted. The dies were recut to 1990 and the originally agreed upon mintage – now with the year 1990 – was then produced.
