VERY RARE Isabella II Countermarked Mexican Hand on Book 8 Escudos

cf.Fr-A3; KM-141.4; cf.Cacho-Type III CS-002; Lopez-Chavez Yriarte-Type IV group A; Gil-Crown variety 5-4-3-III (1836). Type VI countermark crowned Y.II. within circle. On an 1825-MoJM Mexico 8 Escudos. A VERY RARE denomination, on a RARE host coin. The most frequently encountered host coin for a Philippines 8 Escudos is that of a Colombian 8 Escudos. This host (Mexican Hand on Book) is much Rarer, probably on a scale of 5-1 and should command a premium. Avidly sought after by Philippines numismatists and collectors of world coins alike. Famed Philippines numismatist Aldo P. Basso, author of "Coins, Medals and Tokens of the Philippines"; stated "Countermarked gold coins must be placed at the top of the list". All countermarked gold coins of the Philippines should be considered RARE. The two escudos is EXTREMELY RARE with only a few examples (approximately 3) known to exist, and the 1 Escudo is believed to be unique. Due to their rarity, many collectors consider the minor gold coins "uncollectible", with their only hope of a actually acquiring a countermarked Philippines gold coin being that of an 8 Escudos. Rarely do they appear at auction and even Rarer is it to find more than one example represented in a collection. Countermark well applied and nicely centered, small die crack at 12 o'clock going through cross to top pearl of crown and cross section of "Y" in queen's cipher filled. Light to moderate even wear with much luster remaining in the protected areas. A lovely example that is lustrous and sure to please even the most sophisticated of collectors. Countermark EF Details, host coin
