COSTA RICA. 10 Centavos Pattern, 1917-GCR. NGC PROOF-63.
Brass. An unlisted and VERY RARE pattern for the one year type with "GCR" to right of axis. Beautiful deep toning displaying blue, magenta and golden hues. Only the second example we are aware of. Originally this piece was enclosed in an envelope from "CORRESPONDENCIA PARTICULAR DEL SECRETARIO DE ESTADO EN EL DESPACHO DE HACIENDA Y COMERCIO", with a letter enclosed stating "Specimen coin of copper and tin fabricated in the Costa Rican mint, sent to the Government board to choose which to put to circulation, San Jose October 29, 1917" and "First coins minted at the Costa Rican mint the day of September 12, 1917 after the re-establishment of the mint."
